This is what came out when I removed the fender liner and started poking around with a screwdriver.
Cut out the rusty metal. The next step will involve spraying rust inhibiting chemicals all up in between the panels to kill whatever is left in there that I can’t reach.
Had to cut some on the underside of the rail too. This is not going to be very fun.

It’s crap work, but it needs to be done. Good on you for saving a car that is becoming harder to find in serviceable condition.

What’re you going to be using to stop the rust? I’ve got two old Toyotas I’d like to keep mostly rust free too.

As best I can tell there’s not a whole lot you can do to completely prevent it other than keep it out of the rain. I also drove this car in the snow for a few years on snow tires. It was an absolute animal in the snow, but the salt probably accelerated the rust too.

To directly answer the question though, I’ll have to let you know what it’s called when I lay hands on it, a friend of mine worked in a HazMat company for a while and got his hands on some industrial strength stuff that he’s bringing over. I’ll post up with details when I have them

Gem Rust Killer and Metal Prep is the chemical I’m using.
